At each handoff, someone signed a paper log confirming the temperature was within range. None of them had a real-time sensor. All of them were recording what they assumed was true.
This scenario โ not rare, but typical โ represents the core failure mode of India's cold chain: the gap between what is recorded and what actually happened to product temperature in transit.
The scale of the problem
Industry estimates put India's annual cold chain losses at โน92,000 crore. A significant portion of this is driven by temperature excursions โ moments where cargo exits the required temperature band, silently compromising product quality, safety, or efficacy. Why paper logs and manual checks fail
